It's New Year's Eve again, time to share everything I've read this past year.

Some Chanukah Decorating

This year my holiday decorating was a bit more haphazard at home, since I was working a holiday show and all of my time was going into painting/props/tech rehearsal. But after opening night I did finally get out the bins of Chanukah decorations, and the house looks pretty festive.

As usual, Santa Mickey is on the living room console table, which is draped in this fun Chanukah fabric my mom gave me a few years ago. We also got that lighted garland on a timer this year, so we have some magical lights even when we're not thinking about it.

The ornament tree is in it's usual spot on the dining room sideboard, next to the menorahs and lots of dreidels.

And the nutcrackers line up on the mantle, guarding all of the holiday cards we've received so far.

A Return after a Hiatus

If anyone has been following this blog, you probably noticed that I disappeared this summer. At first it wasn't deliberate, but life was busy. And then...it was deliberate.

One of the last posts I had up (not counting meal plans) was about the construction of our chicken coop. We finished the coop, the girls moved outside, and I was waiting on the weather to cooperate to get some good pictures of the finished work to share. I finally got those pictures, and was writing the post, when the unthinkable happened.

A stray dog got into our backyard.

For those that know me in real life, you've probably heard the story by now. For those that don't...I still get heavy hearted thinking about it. And that's what has kept me away from the blog. Because I'm still not entirely ready to write it all down.

But I'd like to get back to my meal planning posts because they really do help me. And I'd like to get back to my house update posts because they are fun.

So, my precious first flock is gone. We have plans to rebuild for next spring. We have plans to make the coop even more predator proof. Because methods that work against nocturnal predators proved useless against a determined neighborhood dog. But you may not see much about that until next spring.

But hopefully with this, I will get over that emotional hurdle the blog has represented, and I'll get back to the posts I enjoy.

Weekly Meal Plan 5.29.16

Happy Memorial Day!

This is a big yard-work weekend for Sean and me, so we're keeping the dinners simple Sunday and Monday. The plan is for Sean to fix and/or move some of our sprinkler heads, and we're putting in some fruit trees and vegetable plants. Not to mention getting the chickens adjusted to living outside! So some easy slow-cooker meals are a must!

Monday: Slow Cooker Pulled Chicken Sandwiches & raw vegetables

Tuesday: leftovers

Wednesday: leftovers

Thursday: Zucchini Lasagna (inspired by this recipe)

Friday: Lamb & Swiss Chard Stew

Saturday: leftovers

Building a Chicken Coop in an HOA

This spring has been busier than we expected, so while we originally planned to custom build a coop we ultimately decided to order one. Planning for chickens while living in an HOA has been a little tricky due to size restrictions, but I also know that we're lucky our HOA allows chickens at all!

We ended up ordering this coop from CCOnly.com:

By our calculations, our 3 girls should be fine in here, especially since we plan to get a portable run to use when we are outside with them. One of the things I like about this coop is that if we do end up deciding they need a larger run, we can add on an extension relatively easily.

Of course, since we back up to open space and we have seen coyotes, foxes, and hawks frequently, we will be predator-proofing. Our plan for that involves digging down and out about a foot, laying 1/4" hardware cloth (to prevent anything from digging up into the run, like rats, voles, etc), then building up a foundation of CMU blocks with hardware cloth along the sides. Then the coop base will sit on the CMUs, with the hardware cloth from the foundation coming up and connecting to the hardware cloth on the sides of the run. The trench will be filled back in, and I'm considering laying pavers along at least one side so that there's a solid place to stand in the winter when the yard can get muddy from snow melt. We also got solar powered predator deterrents that use little red lights to mimic eyes. I'll write more about those once we install them and I know if I like them or not!

The coop also must be painted to match the house (one of our HOA rules). The body of the coop will be the same gray-blue as our house, and the trim plus the framing around the run will be off-white.

So, that's the chicken coop plan right now. It's been a constantly evolving plan, since we originally planned to custom design, then the coop we originally planned to purchase from CCOnly went out of stock while we waited to get HOA approval, and now we're waiting for a weekend with no snow on the ground so that we can get the process started! I'm looking forward to learning from the whole process, and giving our little chickens a nice home in our backyard.

Weekly Meal Plan 5.1.16

Wow, what a crazy end to April! Between two plays, and Denver deciding that it was still winter, I am ready to have some time to relax and get outside again! The warm weather also makes me crave fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden...unfortunately it will be a little while before I get anything fresh from my garden, but the farmer's markets should start back up near the end of May. It's a welcome change!

Here's what we're eating this week:

Sunday: slow cooker paleo chili

Monday: leftovers

Tuesday: rotisserie chicken and salad

Wednesday: Green Chef Taiwanese Scallion Cakes

Thursday: dinner out before Sweeney Todd

Friday: Green Chef Shrimp Fettucini Alfredo

Saturday: Green Chef Rosemary Sirloin Steak

Sunday, April 24, 2016

Weekly Meal Plan 4.24.16

It's both Passover and my second week of tech rehearsals this month. Should be an interesting week, since I'll be packing dinners each night. My plan is to do some cooking during the day, before I head off to rehearsal. We shall see how well it works!

Here's what we're planning to eat:

Sunday: Rosemary and Garlic Leg of Lamb and charosets, maybe another vegetable

Monday: Passover Potato Quiche

Tuesday: Paleo Slow Cooker Chili (minus the bacon for Passover, of course)

Wednesday: leftovers

Thursday: steak with roasted Brussels sprouts

Friday: dinner out before opening night

Saturday: leftovers

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

Weekly Meal Plan 4.17.16

Welcome Kathryn, Clara and Kaylee!

We've been planning to get chickens for a while now, and we finally did it! We have coop plans in the review process with the HOA (more on those details later) and a brooder with three chicks in the guest bathroom. Say hello to the new additions to our family:

We got two Araucanas (also known as Easter Eggers) and one Welsummer. They were supposed to be about a week old when I brought them home on Monday, but we're pretty sure the Welsummer is at least a couple days younger than the Araucanas because she is so much smaller and her feathers aren't as developed yet.

A while back Sean and I decided that if/when we got chickens, we were going to name them after strong science fiction female characters whose names start with a "k" sound.

This is one of the Araucanas. She quickly asserted herself as the dominant chick, so she is Captain Kathryn Janeway (Star Trek Voyager).

The other Araucana. She is named Clara Oswin Oswald (Doctor Who). She's already proving herself a handful, loves to try to fly whenever I'm cleaning the brooder and wants to be in the middle of all action.

This is the Welsummer, Kaylee Frye (Firefly). She's a sweetie and loves following Kathryn around.

Surprisingly, Fleck has adapted to the new residents fairly well. The first day she was a little freaked out by all the cheeping, but the second day she hung out on the guest bed most of the day listening to them. We have a baby gate up between the guest bath and the guest room, so she couldn't get in. I also closed the bathroom door if I couldn't be in the room with the animals. I don't think Fleck would do anything, but she is a cat so I don't trust her completely with my chicks.

The chicks are so much fun to watch! I'm looking forward to the weather warming up so we can get our coop built and move the girls outside. I'll try to post somewhat regularly about the chickens, it shouldn't be too hard with all the pictures I'm taking of them!

Weekly Meal Plan 3.13.16

It's been busy here, so my meal planning has been a little haphazard. Even this week, I have two meetings at 6 pm, meaning I take dinner with me and Sean eats leftovers. But, I'm trying a new produce delivery box (it's similar to the CSA we were part of back in California, where it's a biweekly thing and I can cancel or reschedule delivery, not the traditional CSA model -- I'll talk about it when I've eaten more of the food so I have an opinion!) so I'm working on meal planning for the week even if it is a slightly crazy one!

Here's what we're planning to eat this week:

Sunday: leftovers

Monday: dinner at rehearsal, leftovers for Sean

Tuesday: slow cooker pasta fagioli

Wednesday: leftovers

Thursday: whole chicken and beet greens with bacon

Friday: chicken salad

Saturday: beet pesto pizza

Newly Opened Etsy Shop!

I've been on a major crafting roll lately, so I decided to open up an Etsy shop. HERE Sean helped me come up with the name "To Boldly Craft" since I have also been inspired by Princess Awesome and other crafters who make fantastically nerdy things for girls, for all kids, and for adults.

Living Design To Boldly Craft Etsy knit baby sweater
I have both this sweater and this hat listed right now

I imagine it will be fairly eclectic as my listings grow, as I love trying out new techniques all the time. But right now it has a number of knitted baby projects, since that's been my main stress buster lately. I've also made up some pot holders using leftover fabric from Sean's Dalek Dice Bag, and those amazing rocket ship baby gifts from last summer. Because everyone needs a little space nerd in the kitchen, right?

I'll still post some of my crafts here, and I promise not to post links to the shop too often, since that isn't what this blog is about. But I'm excited to be able to (hopefully) continuously fund my crafty hobby!

Grey and Black Baby Hat

I've held off on sharing this little project because it was a gift, but now that it's been given to the new parents I can share this cute grey and black baby hat!

I had some odd amounts of grey and black yarn in my stash, and I've discovered that baby projects are the best way to use up those small leftovers! I borrowed the book 60 Quick Baby Knits from the library, and used one of the patterns to make this hat. It's made from yarn that I'm 90% sure is wool, though I lost the wrapper to it ages ago.

This is actually my first project doing circular knitting. My awesome in-laws got me a nice new set of knitting needles for Chanukah, so I've been experimenting with trying out new techniques. I'm a little hooked on circular knitting though, so there will likely be more little hats in my future!

Quick Knitted Ear Warmer

This winter has been rather snowy here! On one of our snowy afternoons, I whipped up this quick knitted ear warmer using some leftover chenille yarn. I found this pattern, which I mostly followed. Since my chenille yarn was thicker than the yarn used in the pattern, I cast on as if I was doing the kid size, but did the length about halfway between kid and adult size since my head runs on the small size. I think I actually could have made it even shorter. If you try the pattern, I recommend measuring often!

Living Design Quick Knitted Ear Warmer

Since I have some leftover chenille in grey I may try the pattern again and make it smaller to see if that fits me better. I do like the ear warmer for days when I don't want a full hat but need something to keep the chill off my ears when I go for a walk!

Dalek Dice Bag

Yikes, a month since my last post! That's what theater does to me, but I wouldn't change it for the world! I have a few recent projects that I'll be sharing over the next couple of days. The first is this dice bag.

Sean recently started playing D&D with our friends, so of course he had to get his own set of dice. And when you have dice, you need a dice bag. One of our friends gave me this pattern that she adapted to make dice bags for both herself and her husband. The original pattern is for a travel jewelry bag, and it has 8 interior pockets. My friend eliminated the interior pockets completely, but when Sean saw the pockets he thought it might be nice to have a few so I changed the pattern to have 4 little pockets rather than the original 8.

Sean's very happy with the results!

The pattern was very simple to follow. It tells you to print out 4 copies and tape them together, but I only printed 2 and then folded the fabric, placing the center line of the circle along the fold.

For the pockets, I only had to make a half circle instead of the full circle in the original pattern.

I used a black satin cord, and knotted on some blue plastic beads that I had in my bead stash.

This was a really simple project that I was able to finish in only a couple of hours. Now that I have the pattern, I might make one for myself for jewelry travel like the pattern was designed for! The only problem is that I probably shouldn't use Daleks or I might end up with dice instead of earrings by accident -- or Sean could show up to D&D night with the wrong bag! Hmmm...I guess this calls for a trip to the fabric store to find some more awesome fabric!

Recipe Review: Creme Bruleed Pumpkin Pie

On Christmas, we made this creme bruleed pumpkin pie. What started out as a plan for the perfect dessert turned into a series of experiments, and a discovery that it is in fact worth buying real pie weights. (Spoiler, we now own real pie weights. Sean is thrilled to bake all the pies.)

First, I think the internet version of this recipe is simpler to read than the printed version in the magazine, which is what we were going off of. I put Sean in charge of the pie, since he's a better baker than I am. He's better at the precision stuff, I'm good at the cooking that involves a bit of this and a bit of that. So I was in charge of the rest of our menu (duck, cranberry jelly, stuffing, carrots) and Sean did dessert. Well, because of the way the magazine split the crust and the pie filling onto different pages, the timing for getting the pie started was off. Right from the beginning we knew we wouldn't actually be eating pie for dessert that night.

The pie crust. No pictures exist of it. It was delicious. But it didn't really stay...pie-shaped during the blind bake. We tried dried beans on the parchment paper, which is supposed to be an acceptable substitute for pie weights. It was not enough. It slumped, it rose, it was a weird misshapen mess in a pie dish. But it was a really tasty misshapen mess, and we did enjoy eating it. I just would have liked to eat it with the filling.

The filling. It was phenomenal. Just the right amount of pumpkin, the right amount of cream. Not too rich, not too many spices. Really good!

What we ended up doing (since we couldn't put the filling in the crust that we made) was picking up a store-bought refrigerated crust. They're not the best, but we knew it would let us eat our pie. A side effect is that the store-bought crust was not quite big enough for all of the filling. Which leads us to...

Living Design Recipe Review Creme Bruleed Pumpkin Pie

...mini pumpkin creme brulees! The extra filling just filled our four mini ramekins.

Sean is very excited about his new culinary torch that we had to pick up for this recipe:

Living Design Recipe Review Creme Bruleed Pumpkin Pie

So, while the pie wasn't a technical success for Christmas dinner, every aspect of it was delicious enough that we will absolutely be trying it again. I think with some more practice, and the proper pie weights, we can make this a true success. We grew some awesome sugar pie pumpkins this year, so I plan to grow more next summer, which means more pumpkin pie, right?

Weekly Meal Plan 1.3.16

Sean and I will be doing what we call a modified Whole 30 for the month of January. It's modified because we like flexibility. We'll stick to the real rules as much as possible, but we do give ourselves passes if, for example, I need my little sugar and milk in my coffee during rehearsals. But since doing a Whole 30 requires more meal planning than regular life, I will be sharing a more in-depth meal plan this month. Lunches will be leftovers from the previous night.

So, here's what we're planning to eat this week:

Sunday: finish off the leftovers in preparation to start the Whole 30 tomorrow!

Monday breakfast: scrambled eggs & fruit
Monday dinner: Whole 30 Chicken Korma (except for us it will be lamb korma)

Tuesday breakfast: Jalapeno Sausage Hash (Paleo Slow Cooking)
Tuesday dinner: Fiesta Lime Chicken with Avocado Salsa (Paleo Slow Cooking)

Wednesday breakfast: Paleo Breakfast Muffins
Wednesday dinner: Creamy Tomato Soup and Spinach Salad (Paleo Slow Cooking)

Thursday breakfast: leftover Jalapeno Sausage Hash
Thursday dinner: leftovers

Friday breakfast: leftover breakfast muffins
Friday dinner: Chicken in Cashew Nut Sauce (5 Spices, 50 Dishes) with veggies

Saturday breakfast: scrambled eggs & fruit
Saturday dinner: Italian Sausage & Broccoli Rabe (Cooking from the Farmer's Market)
